As someone who’s experienced life across different cultures—moving from the Caribbean to the United States—I’ve come to understand that grace is a universal language. It speaks to us through stories, whether from sacred texts or the traditions passed down through generations.

Yet, instead of condemnation, he is met with open arms, unconditional love, and a feast in his honor. This parable reminds us that grace isn’t earned; it’s freely given, even when we feel least deserving.

The Palm Wine Tapper and the Cunning Animal

Now, let’s cross the ocean to West Africa, where the folklore of The Palm Wine Tapper and the Cunning Animal echoes similar themes. In this tale, a poor palm wine tapper is tricked by a clever animal that steals his wine every night. When the tapper finally catches the animal, he is faced with a choice: exact revenge or offer forgiveness. Choosing compassion over wrath, the tapper and the animal form a friendship that enriches them both.

Through this blog, I hope to explore how these timeless teachings intersect to offer lessons of forgiveness, redemption, and second chances. I’m also on my own journey—pursuing chaplaincy to offer mental health and Christian counseling. My passion for understanding and forgiveness drives me, and I want to share that passion with you.

For over 15 years, I ran from God’s calling on my life. I started Theology Seminary, but life had other plans. I had to move across borders because of my son’s health, and I thought that meant I had found my “get-out-of-jail-free card.” I completed a semester and tried to make it work.

But God’s call never stopped. He wanted me to be in ministry, and He didn’t give up on me until I finally embraced what He had always called me to do.

My story is much like the two stories we read above. I ran, but God made a way for me to return to my calling. He will do the same for you if you ask/return.
