Sometimes, the first step is what makes the path appear.

In an old Eastern European folktale, there’s a story of a village hidden deep in the mountains. For generations, the only way in or out was a narrow, dangerous trail that curved around cliffs and through dense forest. When war came to the land, a young girl named Mila was tasked with delivering medicine to a neighboring village on the other side of the gorge.

But when she arrived at the edge of the great divide, she saw what she feared most: the bridge was gone. No wood. No rope. Just mist and the wide, dangerous drop.

She was ready to turn back—until she remembered what her grandmother once told her:

“Walk forward in faith, and the bridge will rise beneath your feet.”

It sounded foolish. But with trembling hands and a pounding heart, she stepped forward…

And as her foot touched the air, a plank appeared.

Then another.

And another.

She crossed the entire chasm—not because the path was clear, but because she chose to walk anyway.

Peter Walked Too

This old story reminds me of Peter walking on water.

He saw Jesus walking on water and asked to come out and meet him on the water. Jesus gave him permission.

He didn’t ask for a boat. He didn’t wait for perfect conditions. He saw Jesus, heard the call, and stepped out.

“Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind… he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
Matthew 14:29–30 (NIV)

What an opportunity he had to walk to Jesus. What a wonderful way to show trust in our God.

Peter didn’t walk on water because he had confidence in himself. He walked because he had confidence in the One who called him. Jesus.

When I Stepped Into the Unknown

A selfie at one of my many hospital visits after the military, to try to fix something two surgeries didn’t.

I’ve had to take those same shaky steps, especially when I left the military, broken and uncertain. I did not guess I would be back in school making a blog. This blog.

But life, like that missing bridge, collapsed beneath me.

Still, God whispered, “Walk forward.”
And He showed up.

He used me in bootcamp when others were scared and broken—speaking peace and purpose into young lives in dark places.

He opened a new path when I began pursuing chaplaincy—a calling I once ran from, but now walk toward, plank by plank.

Keep Walking

Sometimes faith doesn’t look like strength.
Sometimes it looks like one scared step into the unknown.
And sometimes, that’s all it takes for the bridge to appear beneath your feet.

Please keep walking and do not give up!

What About You?

  • Is there something God has called you to do that doesn’t make sense yet?
  • Are you waiting for the whole path before taking the first step?

I invite you to reflect and share:
👣 What “bridge” are you waiting on, and what’s stopping you from taking that first step?

Let’s walk forward—together—trusting that each act of obedience invites God to show up in powerful, unexpected ways.

I am waiting for at least the first few steps in my path. I know I do not need the whole thing planned out, and I can figure it out as I go. However, I would like to solidify the first three steps so I am not lost. I just have to start!

The bridge I am waiting on is hoping to see a sign for what I am supposed to do with my career after college. I know God will lead me on the right path, but as of right now, I am just waiting to figure out what that path is! Great Blog!
